Summer of 2016 – The Best Summer Ever!

00001933Phew, ok – i am just coming down from wedding high, and looking forward to having a summer of fun, outdoor, adventures!

I am so sorry I haven’t been very active in updating my website, or blogging.  I wasn’t the one getting married, it was my lovely daughter, and even though she did most of the planning, there still seemed to be a bit of a frenzy in my home to get ready for the big day. It was fabulous, and worth every worry, but I couldn’t focus on much more than that and work.  But now I have some time again, so I am going to step it up!

A couple of things happening very soon!  First, Easy 8’s Dancercise classes are finally starting – Yay!  Thanks to my friends Suzy (in the pic with me at the right) and Judy for testing them out and providing some valuable feedback.  I am having so much fun!  And if you haven’t heard me say it before, it is very important for you health, to ditch the stress and just have some fun!  Every single day you should have some time to do something that brings you peace and joy!  The feel good endorphins, not having the stress related hormones messing with your fat burning furnace – these are just some of the benefits of relaxing and feeling good.  And being active is great way to feel good!  [You can find out more about the Dancecise classes under Our Programs, or on YouGotThis! Ooops – I got sidetracked….

The second thing that is going to start soon, is what I call our YGTF Summer of Support.  Very soon I will be setting up a private FaceBook group, for women in the Sacramento region, who want to try to be more active this summer and needs a little support.  I think it would be so nice to meet more people, just like ME, who really want to get out there and do more, but just don’t have anyone to do it with.  I know I would like to have someone to chat with about any frustrations, with the purpose of finding better solutions instead of tossing on a pity-party party hat.  YGTF will host some excursions so we can meet each other face to face, and do some things together once in awhile.  My hubby knows of a great easy hike up by tahoe (where it is cooler!), that is next to a pretty little lake, and FLAT.  I would love to take a group out to try kayaking.  Indoor cycling, boxing, are a couple of things I want to try again, but not by myself.  If we can arrange it, I would even be opening to going to other events with anyone in the group if they do not want to go by themselves.  How about a pool party, only with people just like us!?!  Heeyyyyy, i would like that…..  Ok- those are just a few ideas.  Would love to hear more.  In the meantime, watch for announcements on our Facebook page.  if you would like to join, email me at as I will probably limit it to the first 25 women who contact me.

Speaking of Facebook, did you know that even if you pay for marketing to reach more people, that those people still can’t see your content again unless you have people liking, commenting, or sharing your posts?  Wow, was that an eye opener for me!!  So if you find something you like on our Facebook page, please like/comment/share, so we can reach even more people with positive messages about how to be healthy, active, and happy with the body you have RIGHT NOW.

Exercise – The Miracle Drug

As I get older I become more painfully aware (pun intended!) how important it is to keep moving my body.   When I fall off the wagon and don’t make the time to be active doing something, every single day, my body feels stiff and heavy as lead, and mentally it is harder for me to stay in a good mood.  I know that being active is an immediate cure for what ails me, and as I did my research for this blog, I was not surprised to find out there are studies that support this. What was amazing was seeing EXERCISE being prescribed to relieve the symptoms of so many different ailments and chronic diseases.  All with a dose of just this one thing – EXERCISE.

Here is a list of just some of the diseases Exercise is a recommended treatment or preventative measure for:

  • Depression – being active produces dopamine – a brain chemical that makes you feel GOOD 🙂
  • Heart Disease – keep flexing your most important muscle!
  • Diabetes – helps control blood sugar levels – can REVERSE type II diabetes
  • Decreases risk of high blood pressure
  • Decreases risk of colon cancer
  • Decreases risk of osteoporosis – weight bearing exercises helps maintain bone mass
  • Recommended for Parkinson’s patients to improves balance and mobility
  • High Cholesterol – raises “good” HDL and lowers triglycerides in the blood
  • Chronic lung diseases – improves Cardiopulmonary endurance
  • Constipation – – increased blood flow stimulates bowel movement
  • Reduces stress and anxiety
  • Improves quality of sleep
  • Improves ability to fight infections
  • Eases symptoms of MS
  • Fibromyalgia – reduces pain, fatigue, and sleep problems

And the list could go on, and on.  You can basically google “Exercise and …” insert any ailment and find a benefit from exercising.  AMAZING!!!

AND, the levels of exercise recommended most commonly to treat these ailments is 30 minutes, of moderate physical activity, just 5 days a week.  Totally do able!

With all of these known benefits, you would think our medical professionals would spend some time with us, asking about how physically active we are, and emphasizing how important it is to our overall health.  I did find an article on a medical reform website that implies there are professionals looking into just that, and how it would become a reality.  You might find it interesting, too.  (

There are also more and more articles being published that not only tout the benefits of exercise, but also prove that being inactive is making us SICK!

Knowing the above, shouldn’t we be considering exercise, which is simply moving your body, a REQUIRED part of our every day lives, and teaching our children the same?

Everyday, we need to feed our bodies good food, get plenty of sleep, smile a lot, and EXERCISE.  So the next time you reach for your daily dose of statins, or high blood pressure medicine, or type II diabetes drug, grab a leash and/or your child’s hand, and take a walk in the beautiful outdoors so someday you might not need those drugs at all!

Bowling: A Younger Persons Sport? No Way


For my birthday this year I wanted to just do something just for the joy of it.  I thought of bowling because I have some fond memories of bowling when I was a younger, and it is something my hubby and I like to do.  I like the challenge of knocking down the pins, but don’t obsess with the score at all.  And I really like trying to get the movement of the delivery down to a smooth, graceful, powerful release.  Sometimes it feels good and seems to work, and sometimes the ball still bounces or heads straight for the gutter – LOL!  I am far from being consistent as my scores will attest – 143 one game and 86 another.  If I break 100 it is a good day!

The point of this post is to remind every one that being active doesn’t have to be drudgery.  According to My Fitness Pal, bowling for 2 hours burned over 500 calories!  I got to use different muscles I don’t use a lot, including my smile muscles!  It was pure fun for me and good for my body and brain and soul.

I will admit that the day after I woke up a little stiff, with a bit of soreness in a knee, and an elbow, but it was worth it.  As I get older I am learning to expect the discomforts of being active, but know that the benefits to my body far outweigh the little aches.  Stretch it out, take a pain reliever if needed, and keep going!!

That is the secret to an active lifestyle and reaping the benefits of the same – just keep going!

Find something you love to do, just for the joy of it, and put in on your calendar for next weekend.

Your Ideal Weight is Not a Number

More than a few times I have completed little quizzes, measured my wrist, used high end scales, and climbed into dunk tanks, just for an assessment of my fitness level and to see how far off I was from my ideal weight. Almost always the results were completely absurd! I would have to cut off a leg, both boobs, and then some to get to the weight they say I should be! Don’t use these as a goal! They are not an accurate gauge of your fitness level, and I’ll give you an example…

About 7 years ago, in my mid 40’s, I was in the best shape of my life! I had decided I wanted to improve my rowing, so I started working out with a trainer. I rowed an hour 3x a week, did a little strength training or light cardio on 2-3 other days, and had 1 kickbutt session with my trainer once a week.. Phew! It WAS a lot – but it was worth it! Over the course of just a few months, I went from wearing a size 16 slacks to a size 10 – I dropped 4 sizes! – but here is the incredible part……wait…for it……I ONLY LOST ABOUT 6 POUNDS!!! I had felt SO good and could do SO much! I surprised myself! I even went on a backpacking trip with my husband, (which I never do) and was not only able to hike in 5 miles with a heavy pack, I walked a 9 mile ‘day hike’ with him on day 2!

So imagine my disappointment at my next trip to the dunk tank and saw the BMI charts had only shown a small improvement. How could this be? Ok – I was no longer in the morbidly obese category but I had only been upgraded to the “extremely unhealthy” category – WTF?!

Crazy, huh? Well, I had to choose whether I was going to cry about it, or laugh about it. I chose the latter, and decided right then and there that I was not going to stress about a number on a scale, or a number on a chart, as long as I felt good and healthy. And you shouldn’t either!

I have since redefined what my ideal weight is, like this;

My ideal weight is not a number!
My ideal weight is the one where I feel great in my jeans.

My ideal weight is the one where my legs can carry me up and down hills or stairs without my lungs burning.

My ideal weight is the one where it is easy to have a bounce in my step and a smile on my face.

Don’t get me wrong, life still makes it challenging to make time to work on being active, everyday. But when I am successful, and I feel good, I ENJOY feeling good, regardless what the scale says!

Being fit is about being healthy! Please don’t obsess about a number. Be Active! Be Happy!
